CIRCUMDUCTION GAIT PDF

Classification[ edit ] Human gaits are classified in various ways. Every gait can be generally categorized as either natural one that humans use instinctively or trained a non-instinctive gait learned via training. Examples of the latter include hand walking and specialized gaits used in martial arts. Some researchers classify foot strike by the initial center of pressure; this is mostly applicable to shod running running while wearing shoes. Foot strike varies to some degree between strides, and between individuals. It varies significantly and notably between walking and running, and between wearing shoes shod and not wearing shoes barefoot.

In circumduction gait, leg moves in a semicircular pattern and we can define circumduction gait as an abnormal gait in which a person in order to clear the ground lifts the leg and takes way form body and moves forward in a semicircular pattern.

Before we move forward, it would be wise if we brush up normal gait pattern for better understanding. If you wish to go deeper into the normal gait pattern then visit this link. Extracting the main points out of it, a walking pattern consists of two phase: 1 Stance phase— During this phase, the leg remains in contact with the ground.

It is during the swing phase, the hemiplegic circumduction gait is obvious. What is circumduction gait and its causes? One of the classic examples of circumduction gait is the gait pattern of hemiplegics.

I will try to explain the circumduction gait in context to hemiplegics. It is usually described as hip extension, adduction, and medial rotation, knee extension, ankle plantar flexion, and inversion. The spastic muscles are synergistically activated into hip and knee extension during the stance phase of walking. The abnormal activation does not allow the hip and knee to flex for foot clearance.

To compensate for these impairments, stroke survivors usually hike hip and circumduct the affected leg during the swing phase for foot clearance.

This lifting of the leg to clear the groud happens due to movement at three joint of our leg. Upward movement of foot.

Bending at knee. Hip bending. But in hemiplegia, the muscle that is responsible for bringing these three movements is weak and weak resulting in difficult to rise and move the leg and hence the difficulty in clearing the ground.

The interactions among muscle weakness, spasticity, and spastic activations act on the trunk, pelvis and the legs. What they do is, they take the leg away from the body leg abduction and swing the leg forward in a semicircular fashion.

Circumduction gait muscle weakness Now we know that circumduction gait results due to the insufficient knee and hip movement. This insufficient movement is due to the lack of power weakness of the group of muscle that is responsible for the movement of the hip and knee. Knee flexors group of muscles.

Hip flexors group of muscles. Weak dorsiflexor. This can be clear with the animation below explaining how hamstring brings about knee bending movement. Hip flexors Hip flexors group of muscle has an action of bringing flexion movement on the hip joint. They are present on the front just on the side of the pubic region. Hip flexors are also a group of muscle that consists of the following muscles: Psoas major muscle.
